ACC Student Spotlight: Yolanda Galang

05/18/2017

What interested you in the Physical Therapist Assistant program?

I volunteered at a skilled nursing facility and it just interested me how the PTAs and the PTs — the whole rehab staff — they were able to bring hope to these patients of getting better and improving their independence and their functionality, so I wanted to do that as well.

Why did you choose American Career College?

I'm not a fan of going to a classroom every day and I like how this program allows you to work on everything at home and work on your labs over the weekend, so it fits in with my schedule. It's really great.

You enrolled out of high school. How was the transition to ACC?

All of my other classmates are older than me and, at first, I felt that they had much more experience. I feel like now, that I'm this far into the program, I feel like I'm just as prepared as them, and I'm really glad I joined.

How has your college experience been?

When I speak to my friends about how their college experience is going, it's nice how they talk about it. They have breaks often and I don't really get any breaks, but I feel like it's all worth it. I get to work before them, so I feel like you give and take, depending on what you want. I'm glad with the route that I chose.

What's the hardest part about being a PTA so far?

The hardest part would probably be to motivate patients to get up, exercising and preparing them to work toward their independence, but I feel like it will get easier as I as I dive into this career — and after clinicals, I'll get more experience.

What's your strength as a PTA?

My strength is creating the exercises and understanding how the patients feel. I'm able to respond to them in a correct way, depending on the situation. I'm really willing to work to get them where they want to go and work them towards their goals.

What advice now would you give yourself when you started the program?

I would tell myself not to worry and just worry about your own path. You're going to get there, because this school prepared you to become who you are to become.
