ACC-Los Angeles Welcomes 14 New ADN Graduates at April 2017 Pinning Ceremony

05/15/2017

After 12 years as a licensed vocational nurse, Detric Cofield was ready to take the next step.

On April 22, he and 13 other American Career College-Los Angeles students did just that when they graduated with an associate degree in nursing (ADN).

Cofield had earned his vocational nursing (VN) diploma from ACC and knew exactly where he wanted to go to help further his career.

“I went here as an LVN and had a great experience, so I decided to come back and continue that experience,” Cofield said, thanking all his instructors who helped “get me where I am now.”

“I especially want to thank my instructor Kafui Okosun,” he said. “She inspired me because of her teaching skills and her lectures.”

Fellow ADN graduate Crystal Blake agreed that Okosun had encouraged students to do their best.

“I was very inspired by Miss Kafui, who was our pediatrics instructor," Blake said. "She was very intimidating, very intelligent but she challenged you. She made you be better."

Blake, who first studied nursing in North Carolina, said ACC offered her “an opportunity that was hard to find.” While looking to enroll in nursing program in California, Blake learned some of the courses she completed in North Carolina weren’t transferable and classes she would need to take had long wait lists.

“I wanted to have an impact on people's lives. I wanted to make a difference in how they feel. I wanted to be able to make them feel better or help them in their time of need,” she said. “It could have taken me years but now, I’m a nurse, and I am very thankful to have found this program.”
