The VN graduates completed their courses on Feb. 1, after spending more than a year immersed in learning the ropes of vocational nursing by the guidance of ACC's experienced instructors. They were presented with a special school pin and welcomed into the profession by the ACC-Orange County nursing director, Dr. Susan Condie.

Condie shared that the nursing pinning ceremony, an intimate and sacred occasion, is a rite of passage for graduates as they transition from student to nurse. Nursing instructors Audrey Uy and Dodi Murrill shared the history of the ceremony, whose roots trace back to the Crimean War and Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of nursing.

Condie closed the ceremony by congratulating the graduates, but reminding them they are not done yet.

“Until a graduate has successfully passed the NCLEX-PN examination, they should still remain in 'learning mode' and engaged with their faculty, their coursework and in attendance of all NCLEX review sessions," she said.

Condie also implored the graduates to have the courage to advocate for their patients and colleagues.

“The torch has been passed. Lead the way. Be ready for the opportunities that come your way,” she said. “And remember this day, the people who love you, and the instructors and administration who wish you great success and joy in your new nursing career.”
