ACC Community Outreach Offers Free 'Soft Skills' Workshop for High Schoolers

06/20/2016

You might have seen American Career College’s Community Outreach team at health fairs, career fairs and other events, but did you know that ACC offers free soft-skill training to high school students?

3 Tips: Soft Skills

What are they?

Hard skills are like knowing how to drive a forklift or speak a language. Soft skills are less tangible. Think "people skills," but more for business.

Interview 101: "Tell us about yourself."

Being natural takes practice. You only get one chance to make a first impression so make sure you've gone over what you will say in advance.

Why 'Dining Etiquette?'

Eating lunch with your co-workers can be more important than you think. Don't lose out on a promotion because you were rude to the waiter.

“It’s a service to students to help them with the next step in their education,” Community Outreach Director Sandra Villafan said.

High school educators can request a workshop through one of ACC’s high school liaisons. The lesson plans fit under California teaching standards (Common Core) and include resume writing and interview skills, salary economics and dining etiquette.

The community outreach team has expanded recently to include two new team members. Soft-skill workshops are already being booked in the fall.

An educator with the Claremont Unified School District recently sent a thank you note about Community Outreach liaison Vanessa McCormick and her visit to San Antonio High School.

"I don’t normally send a supervisor a note of thanks but, after reviewing the workshops with the three different faculty members and other counseling personnel, we all were impressed with her presentations and persona," Suzanne Miller, a College/Career & ROP technician with San Antonio High and Claremont High school, wrote.

"This is an alternative education school and the population is not always receptive; McCormick was quite engaging and did not let the few antics deter her from her presentation. We all concluded that our students gained a great deal of knowledge from these three great opportunities. She or any representative is welcome anytime."
