It's not every day you can save lives on your lunch break — but that's exactly what happened during a blood drive and marrow screening at American Career College-Ontario this January.
More than 75 blood donors registered — including 39 first-timers — and 67 units of blood were collected at the ACC-Ontario campus on Jan. 26. One unit can help save three lives, LifeStream representative Tamara Broder said, which means more than 200 people would benefit from ACC's donations.
“The efforts of American Career College have always been greatly appreciated and their support of the community blood program will go a long way toward replenishing blood supplies and ultimately saving lives,” Broder said. “A teaspoon of blood can save a baby’s life.”
Blood drive participants received a free cholesterol screening with their donation and reward points that can be redeemed for items at LifeStream's online donor store. Bone marrow screenings were conducted by Be the Match, a donor registry operated by the National Marrow Donor Program.
"Giving blood is rad," ACC-Ontario student Evelyn Landaverde said after donating.
Landaverde and her fellow surgical technology students Candie Velasquez and Andre Soriano were relaxing in the common area on campus — each wearing matching wraps on their right arms.
"We're saving lives on and off the field," Velasquez said. "The sterile field."
