Massage therapy students from American Career College-Ontario were on-hand this July to offer free chair massages to nursing students after midterms.
About 200 West Coast University-Ontario students stopped by the lobby on Stress Release Day to refuel and reset after their exams. More than 40 people signed up for the 10-minute massages offered by the ACC massage students.
“They get to work on different body types and they get different responses from people. It also gives the students an opportunity to maybe meet a potential client for the future or maybe a potential employer," ACC-Ontario massage therapy program director Dale Sloan said.
Sloan and two students performed all the bodywork. Sloan said it was good practice for the students and an easy way to give back to the healthcare community.
"It helps them hone their skills for chair massage, doing some trigger point work, maybe a little deep tissue work and some stretching but it really gets us out in the community and it helps us give back as well," Sloan said. "We love doing this and we love sharing our knowledge and our gift with other people — and like I always say, ‘Who doesn’t love a free chair massage?’”
WCU-Ontario Student Services Director Jonathan said the BSN students really appreciated the trio coming over to volunteer their time.
"The students said the massages were excellent," Langley said. "They would have even paid for them."
