The city of Long Beach unveiled its new bike sharing program on March 10 and — luckily for American Career College-Long Beach — it’s just steps from campus.

"It’s kind of exciting because right outside our campus was the first reveal of the bikes coming to our entire community," ACC-LB Student Resource Center Manager Chandra Deveroux said. "They have these great commuter bikes available for only $15 a month or a student can rent it per day."

Mayor Robert Garcia and First District Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez attended the opening ceremony at the Promenade and 3rd Street, less than one block from ACC-Long Beach's front doors. The first 100 bicycles are bought and built, but the service won’t be available until March 19.

“This new program is not just about getting around, but it’s also about sustainability,” Garcia said at a press conference. “It’s about making a more walkable, pedestrian-friendly, urban and sustainable environment here in the city of Long Beach. We are excited that this is one of the very first bike share programs launched really anywhere in California and certainly in Southern California, so we are leading the way.”

Eventually, 50 stations with 500 bicycles around the city will be made available to the public. The Long Beach Bike Share program is funded by a $2.3 million grant from the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

“They are placing 10 stations in the community right now and using the bikes actually costs less than a bus pass for our students,” Deveroux said.
