ACC-Ontario Dental Assisting Students Perform Polishings at Mexican Consulate

10/21/2019

While the rest of American Career College was off celebrating graduation in Ontario, a group of dental assisting students were working hard at a volunteer event in San Bernardino.

According to ACC-Ontario dental assisting instructor Hilde Hunter, the five students helped 50 patients while working in unconventional conditions at the Mexican Consulate.

"Not only did they do coronal polishing for five hours straight, but they did it standing up while the patients were seated in an upright position," Hunter said. "This is a physical challenge for any dental personnel to do, especially considering they cleaned teeth for 50 patients between only five students."

Watching the students perform in such an unusual set-up made her really proud, Hunter said, especially considering that three of the students were only in their second module, one was in her first mod and one was in his final module.

"If you didn’t know any better, you would’ve thought they were already working in the field," Hunter said. "They showed professionalism at all times and had the best positive attitude. No one complained about being tired and they treated the patients with the utmost dignity and care."

Hunter wasn't alone in being impressed. She said the dentist at the clinic commented on the fantastic job the students did and appreciated their skill set.

"He was especially impressed with the students’ care of the patients, and noted their kindness, their knowledge and their ability in chair-side duties," Hunter said.
