About a dozen medical assistant students from American Career College-Los Angeles worked side-by-side with nurses at a community flu clinic this October.
Under the supervision of ACC-Los Angeles medical assistant instructor Mary-Sue McPetrie, students assisted the LA Department of Public Health nurse volunteers with immunizing and registering patient information of about 200 people at the Arroyo Vista Health Center flu clinic.
Arroyo Vista Health Center is a non-profit organization with four locations and a mobile clinic that serves the greater Los Angeles area since 1981. Arroyo Vista has also been a great employer over the years in hiring ACC medical assistants, ACC-LA Career Services specialist Jason Stoll said, adding that volunteering is one of the best ways to visit potential worksites.
"It's great experience and exposure for our MA class ambassadors to attend the community clinics and get a little taste of what their expected role would be in the healthcare world."
Arroyo Vista Family Health Center provides a comprehensive range of medical, dental, optometry, behavioral health, imaging and pharmaceutical services. They are active in the community, working hand-in-hand with local schools, churches, libraries and other community partners to offering free health screenings, preventive health workshops, no-cost flu fairs and immunizations, health education materials and more.
