After all the facts and figures her classmates had learned over the course of their vocational nursing program, cohort speaker Kirstyn Warren asked her fellow graduates to never forget one last thing: They made it.
“It’s been a long journey for all of us,” Warren told the audience gathered at American Career College-Ontario this August. “Just a year ago we were sitting in a Term One class on our first day of nursing school, both excited and terrified. Together we conquered our first exams, where every question had four possible answers and sometimes all you could do is figure out which one was least wrong.”
Warren reminded her 20-plus classmates that their education had begun simply, like in kindergarten, with the ABC’s of medicine.
“But in our case, we learned that the ABC’s are not just the starting letters of the alphabet, but also represent important medical functions like airway, breathing and circulation,” she said. “While some of us may continue in our education, all of us share one common thing: We did it. I look forward to working with you in the future as certified nurses.”
