ACC-Los Angeles VN Students Volunteer for Prader-Willi Syndrome Walk 2018

05/07/2018

American Career College vocational nursing students volunteered this April at the 18th annual Walking for Prader-Willi Syndrome at Griffith Park.

"The volunteers did an outstanding job. The PWS director thanked ACC for organizing and sending our students and coming to the event in person,” ACC-Los Angles Career Services Director Gohar Abrahamian said. “The families had a great time and the event was a big success and our students help make it possible."

Students assisted with games, arts and crafts, staffing the registration table, serving lunch and cheering on the participants as they walked. ACC-LA Career Services Specialist Rachel Montales said events like the community walk are valuable because they provide positive outcomes not only for the community but for the ACC students as well.

"Serving the community is one of my passions,” Montales said, “and we are looking forward for more community events in the coming months."

According to the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association web site, PWS is a complex genetic disorder that typically causes low muscle tone, short stature, cognitive disabilities, problem behaviors and a chronic feeling of hunger that can lead to excessive eating and life-threatening obesity. It is estimated that one in 12,000 to 15,000 people has PWS.
