Ask a Recruiter: What Not To Do During an Interview or When Starting a New Job

12/03/2018

At a recent career fair at American Carer College-Ontario, we asked healthcare recruiters their recommendations for what job seekers should avoid doing during interviews or when starting a new position.

Lycett Urias, a human resources supervisor with SuperCare Health, said that while a close, family-like environment is desirable at work, she recommended new hires not get too comfortable with their co-workers too soon.

"You can get comfortable to an extent, but be aware that it's a career you're trying to make for yourself," Urias said. "You want to make a good first impression, and just continue that reputation in a sense, especially if you're interested in growing."

Cynthia Arroyo, a district manager at America's Best Contact & Eyeglasses, said she's never impressed by people who show up unprepared or wearing casual clothes -- like jeans or tennis shoes -- for a job interview.

"You would be surprised how many people walk in not prepared," she said.

West Coast Dental marketing field representative Kim Vura said the key to being successful is working well with others and not being afraid to communicate with co-workers and patients.

"We don't want introverts. We want extraverts. We want people who know dentistry. We want people that understand the patient's need. We want them to understand the doctor's needs. We want them to make sure they can get along with everyone on the team," Vura said. "But you know what? If you went to American Career College, I bet you know how to assist. I bet you know how to have compassion. I bet you know how to work with others."
