ACC Graduate Spotlight: Aida Meza

11/01/2016

Aida Meza can proudly state that she is a medical billing and coding graduate of American Career College-Ontario, but the road to get there was anything but easy.

“Many people believe certain things are impossible, although I’m a graduate before you today to prove anything is possible with hard work and dedication,” Meza shared.

She was born and raised in Jalisco, Mexico 58 years ago. Meza graduated from secretarial school and worked for a few years but when she went on vacation to visit her aunt in California, she decided she wanted to move here permanently. She then got a job in a warehouse, fell in love, and started a family. When she was pregnant with her second child, her boyfriend abandoned her to raise her kids alone.

Meza never gave up and worked two to three jobs to make ends meet for her and her children. On her lunch hour, she would go to the daycare and watch children to help subsidize the cost.

But the hardships kept coming as every time Meza would get a job, the company would eventually go out of business and she would have to go on unemployment. One day, the Employment Development Department advised Meza to get her high school diploma because every job would soon require that as a minimum requirement. She got a list of schools from the office and chose the no-cost high school equivalency (HSE) program offered by ACC-Ontario. Meza worked hard and passed all but two parts of the HISET test.

“I struggled as a single mother all my life but this past year I also had to deal with the struggle of studying for courses all while being unemployed searching for jobs and still doing part-time work to help pay the bills,” she shared.

Meza then decided to keep going with her education and enrolled in the medical billing program at ACC-Ontario and graduated with honors and perfect attendance, and was named a program ambassador!

“English as a second language was always a challenge, but in my job it is actually preferred,” Meza shared about her job with a company that works with medical air insurance.

“With the help of ACC and the support of the staff as well as peers, today I have my GED, diploma, I am currently employed and am so happy,” she said.
