ACC Graduate and Clinical Partner Spotlight: Nathan Mitchell, Pulse Cardiology

11/14/2016

Nathan Mitchell had a successful career in business and marketing, but decided he wanted a degree in a healthcare field to take his career to the next level. Mitchell is now Practice Administrator for Pulse Cardiology in San Bernardino County, and an American Career College-Ontario graduate in Surgical Technology.

“I felt that going back to school and stepping up my game on the medical side was really kind of the perfect way to present myself to go into the administration field ultimately.”

Mitchell had a bachelor’s degree in business and communications but wanted to bridge the gap between business and administration in the medical field, so he decided to go back to school for his Associate of Occupational Science degree in Surgical Technology.

“ACC’s Surg Tech program was fantastic,” Mitchell said. “It was a really hands-on program. Instructors were absolutely dedicated to the students and probably I would say my best memories here are you working in the lab one-on-one with a lot of instructors and of course our fellow students.”

In addition to being a proud alumnus, Mitchell is also on ACC-Ontario’s Program Advisory Committee for the surgical technology program, where employers have the opportunity to provide feedback on the program.

“I think I'm able to give ACC solid feedback of what the program needs to better prepare the students and [ACC] absolutely listens,” Mitchell said. “They’re very dedicated into continually updating and evolving their educational pieces here so they are setting their students up for success.”

Mitchell has experienced first-hand the success of hiring ACC graduates.

“We’re an extern site so I know this [ACC] is going to be my first phone call in terms of when we're looking for students to fill positions in our office.”

And Mitchell’s degree wasn’t the only successful outcome from the program. He met his wife in class in the same surgical technologist program at ACC-Ontario.

“She sat behind me and when we came here we were just friends we’re just all students going for the same goal in the cohort,” Mitchell shared. “Now we're married five years and we have two kids.”
