Daughter’s Fight Against Cancer Inspires Father to Enter Healthcare Profession

01/03/2022

Prior to attending American Career College, Jeffrey Simpson traveled the world doing repairs on nuclear power plants and pump systems working as a millwright. He chose to pivot his career, however, after witnessing his daughter’s battle with cancer.

“My daughter really influenced me,” Simpson shared. “My daughter is a cancer survivor, and I spent a lot of time with her at the hospital. I just fell in love with the way they took care of the patients.”

After her recovery, Jeffrey said he had an overall desire to care for others the way his daughter had been treated. That feeling plus the inspiration of being married to a registered nurse ultimately led him to return to school and pursue a career in healthcare.

“As a community, we wouldn’t survive if we didn’t help each other out,” he said.

While the surgical technology program is accelerated, Jeffrey said the instructors are always available to “make it so you can understand it at a fast pace.”

“I think this program is outstanding,” he said. “Just the camaraderie, the spirit that the instructors and the staff have. It’s a very positive attitude.”

Now well into the Associate of Occupational Science in Surgical Technology program at ACC-Ontario, Jeffrey hopes to work in trauma surgery after graduating.

“I want to help with direct patient care and be a patient advocate for those that are too sick to really speak up for themselves,” he shared. “I’d like to be there to help them.”
