Pride Spotlight: Susan Pailet, ACC Administration

06/07/2021

As the parent of a gay child, Susan Pailet loves her son because he has a great personality, confidence, intelligence, "a level of charisma that is off the charts" and is a good person. The fact that her son, Shane, is gay was never something she thought about.

"One day I was visiting my accountant, who is a family friend and my son's accountant as well. He told me, 'Shane is such a great kid. You know, he changed my mind because I never really understood that a person could be born gay and he explained it to me and I get it,'" Pailet said. "This conversation has stayed with me as I try to understand how others view the world. It would never occur to me that someone wouldn't understand that true diversity brings out the best in all of us!"

For Pailet, Pride means loving others for being their authentic selves — to not just accept them, but to embrace them.

"I try to see the best in everyone and never underestimate the value other points of view can add to your life," Pailet, the Chief Learning Officer at American Career College, said. "I love Shane because he is someone who adds so much joy and love to the world."
