ACC Alumni Spotlight: Julio Guillermo

01/18/2022

For Julio Guillermo, completing his 20-month journey at American Career College was not only a special moment but also proof of his persistence and dedication.

“When I first started this program I kind of doubted myself. I was like ‘Am I really going to do this?’” he shared. “But I feel like as I matured throughout the program, I realized the type of hard work that needs to go into it, and I put that hard work in — and here I am.”

Guillermo recently graduated from ACC-Los Angeles with his associate degree in nursing. He made the decision to continue his education and pursue a career in nursing while working as a discharge planner at a hospital.

“That’s where I got exposed to nursing which is what influenced me to become a nurse today,” he said. “I think it’s just such a rewarding career, especially for people who care to help others.”

Guillermo said he spent nearly two years trying to get into nursing programs at competitive institutions. After struggling to find the right school, he eventually took some advice from a friend who steered Guillermo toward attending American Career College.

“I had a friend sit down with me. She went to West Coast University, and she proposed the idea of coming to a private school,” he shared. “So, I decided to just jump in and do it.”

Once in school, Guillermo quickly learned he needed to let go of his old “C’s get degrees” mindset.

“You will realize the type of work that you need to put in as the program goes on,” he shared. “You will need to realize what’s a priority to you and what can be put aside. School is going to be one of those priorities.”
